Chiromaws are bat-like creatures that spawn in the Betweenlands' Cavern and Lake Cavern layers and rarely anywhere else above the surface (besides Deep Waters biomes). They also spawn from some spawners in Cragrock Towers and the Wight Fortress.

Description[edit | edit source]

Chiromaws appear as relatively large, bat-like creatures with a gaping 'maw' with teeth and glowing yellow eyes. They will often hang upside down from the ceilings of caves or structures before targetting the player. They extend their wings and fly around with great weight, flapping towards the player and dealing basic melee damage. They strike quickly and are most effective in swarms.

Chiromaws can be killed in one hit using a rare loot weapon, the Critter Cruncher.

Strategy[edit | edit source]

As Chiromaws are not usually seen in great numbers unless spawned from spawners, they are somewhat easy to kill. They have little health and can usually be killed in a couple hits. However, if they manage to flock you, they can kill you quickly as they strike fast and can fly to catch up to you should you run away; if this happens, try to hide yourself behind a wall. The Chiromaws will stop targeting you after a few seconds if there are blocks between them and you, so this is a good way to avoid fighting them at least while you get your bearings together.

Taming[edit | edit source]

Chiromaws can be tamed by stealing a Chiromaw Hatchling and hatching it. Tamed Chiromaws will follow and teleport to the player, attacking any hostile mobs nearby by shooting barbs at them. When a Lightning Chiromaw's barbs hit an enemy, they will shock other nearby entities. When right clicked, they will sit on the players head, giving them a double jump. They will still attack hostile mobs in this state. Right clicking on a ceiling will remove the Chiromaw from your head and place it hanging from the block. They can also be put into the inventory by using a net on them. They can be healed with Raw Snail Flesh.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Chiromaw is named after the Chiroptera bat family.
  • The Chiromaw's working name during development was the Flying Fiend.
  • A flock of Chiromaws is called a Slaughter.
